What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical hair restoration technique that uses micro-dots of pigment to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles. Whether you’re experiencing a receding hairline, thinning crown, patchy beard growth, or visible scarring, SMP creates the illusion of density and a fuller head of hair.

At Scalp Guy SMP in Wilmington, MA, we work with clients from Boston, Cambridge, Lowell, and surrounding areas to create realistic, long-lasting results tailored to your scalp, skin tone, and style.

Who is SMP for?

SMP is ideal for:

  • Men with receding hairlines or full baldness
  • Women with thinning hair or wide part lines
  • Clients with alopecia or autoimmune-related hair loss
  • Scar camouflage (FUT/FUE hair transplants, trauma scars)

Application

Scalp Micropigmentation is completed over 2 to 3 sessions, each spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart, to build density and ensure optimal retention.

Before Your SMP Appointment (Pre Care)

To ensure the best results, follow these guidelines before your session:

  • Avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and aspirin for 48 hours prior.

  • No caffeine 24 hours before treatment.

  • Do not use retinols, exfoliants, or self-tanners on the scalp for one week.

  • Avoid sunburns and keep the scalp moisturized and healthy.

  • Shave or cut your hair the day before, if instructed by your artist.

Aftercare Instructions (Healing Timeline)

Your scalp will need time to heal and absorb the pigment properly. Here’s what to expect:

Day 0 to Day 5 – Initial Healing Phase

Avoid the following for the first 5 days:

🚫 Heavy sweating or workouts – No intense exercise or heat exposure
🚫 Scrubbing or shampooing – Skip all products and avoid irritating the scalp
🚫 Shaving – Let the scalp rest and avoid any blade contact
🚫 Direct sunlight – UV rays can lead to fading and damage
🚫 Touching your scalp – Prevent bacteria or infection by keeping hands off

What you can do:

✅Lightly dab with a clean, damp cloth—no soaking
✅Wear a breathable hat or skullcap if needed
✅Drink water and follow any medications as directed

Day 5 to Day 10 – Peeling & Itching Phase

Still avoid the following:

🚫 Scratching or picking – Some peeling is normal—do not touch it
🚫 Heavy sweating or workouts – No intense exercise or heat exposure
🚫 Shampoo or exfoliating scrubs – Harsh products interrupt healing
🚫 Direct sunlight – UV rays can lead to fading and damage
🚫 Self-tanners or irritants – Keep the scalp chemical-free

You may now:

✅ Lightly rinse scalp with fragrance-free cleanser
✅ Moisturize gently (fragrance-free only)
✅ Carefully shave the head if needed
✅ Resume light workouts and daily activities

After Day 10:

For clients returning for their second session, we recommend light grooming (no irritation) and consistent moisturizing to prep the skin.

By day 10, most clients from Greater Boston and surrounding towns are ready to:

✅ Return to their regular routine
✅ Resume all workouts, showers, and shaving
✅ Begin their next SMP session (if needed)

 Before your next treatment:

✅ Wash your scalp
✅ Trim or shave the area if recommended by your artist

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it fade or change color over time?

Yes—but in a good way. SMP fades gradually over 4–6 years depending on your skin type, sun exposure, and aftercare. It won’t turn blue or green if done properly with professional pigment and technique. We only use medical-grade pigments designed specifically for the scalp—not regular tattoo ink.

Does SMP hurt?

otally fair question—and one we hear all the time.
Scalp Micropigmentation isn’t pain-free, but it’s surprisingly tolerable for most people. Clients usually describe the feeling as light scratching or tapping—more uncomfortable than painful.

Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but we always go at your pace and check in with you throughout the session. If you’ve had a tattoo before, you’ll likely find SMP much easier to sit through.

Most clients walk out saying: “That was way easier than I expected.”

What if it looks too dark or unnatural on me?

Totally valid concern. We hear this often, especially from first-timers.
At Scalp Guy SMP, we start conservatively and build density over 2–3 sessions spaced 2–3 weeks apart. This gives you time to adjust and ensures the healed result looks soft and natural—not overly dark or sharp. We customize pigment tone to your skin and existing hair for seamless blending.

I have an old SMP or transplant scar. Can you fix or cover it?

Absolutely. We do a lot of scar camouflage and corrective SMP. If the pigment is faded and your skin is healthy, we can usually blend it beautifully. We’ll evaluate it during your consult and show you real examples of similar cases we’ve worked on.

How much does it cost, and is it worth it?

Cost varies depending on the area (hairline, crown, full scalp, or scar), but most clients invest between $500–$1,500 per session. It’s typically done in 2–3 sessions, and results last for years. Compare that to hair transplants, pills, or wigs—and you’ll see why SMP is one of the most cost-effective and low-maintenance solutions out there.

What’s the downtime? Can I go to work the next day?

Yes! Most clients return to work the next day. Your scalp might be a little red for 24–48 hours, but there’s no surgery, no stitches, no bleeding, and no recovery bed needed. Just avoid sweating, washing your scalp, and sun exposure for the first few days.
